The Friday Refrain: What's New In Music

Today is such a big day for releases that Macy Gray and Chic decided to delay releasing their albums until the end of the month. At least I assume that's why they delayed their albums, as much as it grieves me, because seriously...

New Music

Paul McCartney - do I need to explain who he is? Beatles and Wings, well that's funny, sounds like a sci-fi/fantasy series, calling dibs on it - anyway, he released Egyptian Station. Also of music greatness, Paul Simon released In The Blue Light which is reimaginings of some of his songs. And the big hitters keep coming, Lenny Kravitz is back with Raise Vibration. On the rock end of things, Clutch released Book of Bad Decisions. We're going to move on to a band with a big sound - first up with St. Paul & the Broken Bones who released Young Sick Camellia today. Then we've got a slew of indie rock: Milo Greene, Adult Contemporary; JEFF the Brotherhood, Magick Songs; Waxahatchee, Great Thunder; Menace Beach, Black Rainbow Sound; Ava Luna, Moon 2; Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears, The Difference Between You & Me; Ghostland Observatory, See You Later Simulator; and last but not least The Mountain Goats, Hex of Infinite Binding. Pianist Chilly Gonzales releases Solo Piano III today as well. And a personal favorite over the years, electronic poppy indie rock Teleman release their third album Family of Aliens.

Should I Bother?

  • Paul McCartney: This is definitely worth a listen. There are some really solid songs on here - what would you expect really, I suppose. But it's always nice to hear solid music from a musician who's been making music for so long.

  • Paul Simon: There are some really cool versions of his songs on here.

  • Teleman: It's upbeat and light. Sometimes the vocalist reminds me of Pet Shop Boys.

  • Chilly Gonzales: This is pretty and laid back piano music. Like light glinting off the water of a lake.

  • Ghostland Observatory: Like Teleman but louder.

You have no idea how much effort it took to get that much listened to. My child is the equivalent of a lapdog today. And wants to listen to many things that aren't what I want to listen to, so I'm impressed I got this much done. So that's what you get for today and I apologize if the playlist ends up being weird because i just picked random unlistened to tracks for the rest of the list. Take that! Oh and Happy Listening!
